NACFB AGM and Gala Awards Dinner 2005

Birmingham, 11 November 2005

The 13th annual general meeting of the NACFB was held during the morning of 11 November in the unusual but delightful surroundings of the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham.

Stuart Gray, president, welcomed around 180 delegates to the AGM, following a two minute silence on Armistice Day.

Stuart, following approval of the 2004 minutes, outlined what had been achieved during the year and thanked members of the board for their commitment and support.

Stuart Barton, vice president, updated the audience as to the actions which had been taken to implement the recommendations of the strategy committee, which presented its conclusions in early 2004.

Keith Heron followed with his ever popular statistical review of membership levels and the amounts, by category, of funding introduced by members. Keith went on to familiarise the audience with the two preliminary meetings of a recently established compliance forum and his view of the importance of such a forum in endeavouring to maintain self-regulation of commercial finance.

Stuart then sought approval of the 2006 subscriptions, patrons’ fees and professional indemnity insurance premium, together with the 2006 budget.

He then had the somewhat unenviable task of announcing that Lisa was leaving the association on 1 December to pursue a new career with Exeter University and that totally coincidentally Keith Heron would be resigning his position in the spring to pursue an opportunity he had identified in the provision of commercial finance training.

During the afternoon, five distinct training seminars covering the economic outlook, the FSA and regulation, the small business service, commercial finance qualifications, and culminating with a motivational presentation were all extremely well received.

In the evening, 400 guests were treated, after dinner, to a highly amusing, witty, full of Yorkshire grit, performance from that fast bowling legend Freddie Truman, OBE, and £2,300 was generously donated to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Member patrons and guests were unanimous in their praise for what is the biggest event in the association’s calendar, and our sincere thanks go to the event sponsors, NatWest Bank and Cattles Invoice Finance, and to Lothbury Allen for sponsoring the champagne reception.

Congratulations to Steve Olejnik for successfully obtaining the Diploma in Commercial Finance, to all the winners of the awards of the seven lender categories, and finally to Brian Ward for his richly deserved “Lifetime Achievement Award”.

Stuart Gray
