24% increase in UK shoplifting
UK stores have seen a 35% increase in crime in the past year and more than 900 staff were physically assaulted.
As a result of the ongoing conversation surrounding the shoplifting epidemic, security experts at Get Licensed have shared their expert advice on how stores can tackle the rise of shoplifting and protect their customers and staff.
Sietaj Rahman, customer liaiofficer at Get Licensed comments: “In the current climate, security guards are constantly on high alert, as thieves are becoming increasingly bold and sophisticated in their tactics. It’s no longer just opportunistic shoplifters; we’re dealing with organised criminal groups and individuals who are willing to go to great lengths to steal.
Some stores have increased their security measures to support the on-the-ground staff, adding enhanced CCTV cameras and RFID tagging systems, to deter and track potential thieves but ultimately, it’s the job of in-store guards to catch and detain these criminals.
Perhaps the most concerning aspect is the risk it poses to security guard’s personal safety. We understand our role and the responsibilities we accept as part of that but confronting shoplifters can be dangerous as some individuals are willing to resort to violence or aggression to escape capture.”
Shahzad Ali, CEO of Get Licensed, has shared 9 ways in which stores can tackle the rise of shoplifting and protect customers and staff alike:
- Increased Staffing: More security staff can provide better coverage of the store, deter potential thieves, and respond more effectively to incidents.
- Training and Education: Providing ongoing training and education for security guards is essential. This includes not only techniques for apprehending thieves but also conflict resolutions and de-escalation training to reduce the risk of violence during confrontations.
- Advanced Surveillance Technology: Continue to invest in advanced surveillance technology, such as high-quality CCTV cameras, facial recognition systems, and RFID tagging, to enhance detection and deterrence capabilities.
- Collaboration with Law Enforcement: Establish a strong working relationship with local law enforcement agencies. Quick response times and cooperation with police can make a significant difference in apprehending and prosecuting shoplifters.
- Customer Service Training: Ensure that security staff is trained in customer service skills. This can help maintain a positive shopping environment and reduce the perception of surveillance among innocent customers.
- Innovative Store Layout: Redesign store layouts to minimise blind spots and improve visibility. This can make it harder for shoplifters to operate unnoticed.
- Employee Support: Provide support for security guards’ physical and mental wellbeing. Offer counselling services and ensure they have access to safety equipment, such as personal alarms & communication devices.
- Data Analysis: Use data analytics to identify patterns and trends in theft incidents. This information can help in developing targeted strategies to prevent theft in specific areas or times.
- Loss Prevention Teams: Establish dedicated loss prevention teams within the organisation to focus solely on preventing theft. These teams can work closely with security guards and gather intelligence on potential threats.
