Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes: COVID-19 increases the desire for start-ups
Despite the rapid vaccine roll-out in the UK, the corona crisis is still having a major impact on people’s lives – both personally and professionally. What impact has the pandemic had on how satisfied Brits are with their jobs and to what extent has this new world led to a higher desire for founding businesses in the UK?
IONOS SE explored this topic by asking 500 British people about their job satisfaction. The study was conducted in July 2021 and the subjects are equal parts men and women. The e-book “British Dreams and Wishes: A Business Survey” presents the most important results. You can download the e-book here for free.

Necessity is the mother of invention: more business ideas since the pandemic
One might think that the Corona pandemic has increased the British people’s need for security and permanent employment. But the opposite seems to be the case: For a staggering 40% of Britons, the need for self-reliance has increased further because of the pandemic. New business opportunities seem to have been created for many British citizens as a result.

Women suffer more than men in the workplace
It is no wonder that women are frustrated with their jobs when they were the ones to suffer significantly more due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Women now long for a better work-life balance and for more recognition at work. Almost 61% of the women in the survey stated that their dreams of becoming self-employed stem from wanting to avoid unequal workplace treatment and so they can have better working hours.
What stops Britons from starting a business in times of the Corona crisis?
Although the desire to start a business in the UK is high, only a small amount put their visions into practice. The “British Dreams and Wishes” business survey takes a close look as to the reasons why people do not take the jump and start-up.
- About 41.3 % of Brits do not start their own business because of financial reasons.
- 7% of the participants have not yet fully developed their idea.
- 36% of the British people are afraid of the lack of security when starting-up
In the IONOS SE e-book, you’ll find out what support the British people would like in starting their own business.
