Modern business construction trends to look out for
The turbulence of 2020 has seen changes across the board. And COVID-19 may have impacted general employment, it hasn’t stopped certain pockets of society. The buy to let boom will only increase as the 5% mortgages come back, but the industry that will truly benefit is the construction industry. 2021 is going to be a massive change for the construction industry. And while COVID has resulted in businesses having to adapt and innovate, it has also yielded many other outcomes.
Efficient technology
Technology is always evolving. And COVID-19 caused a widespread reliance on construction technology. But while smart contracts and augmented reality are slow on the upkeep, the big change has been in the use of drones. The usage of drones has risen by a massive 239%! Once used purely for photography, drones are now being used much more. They can produce thermal imaging and can provide real-time data to construction industries, such as through drone survey capabilities. Technology has also embraced automation, and building information technology has helped industry leaders to stand out.
The rise in protective equipment
on an obvious level, COVID has caused a surge in protective equipment. But there is also a rise of machines, wearable technology is slowly making its way to the construction site. For example, work boots that can connect to wi-fi and alert others if someone has injured themselves. While we’ve already seen some robots replace some aspects of human workers, it’s more than likely the robot actions will be a supplementary addition.
Remote work sites
While remote working was the trend of 2020, the construction industry saw none of this. However, mobile applications in the construction industry have come along in leaps and bounds, allowing for inspections and measurements taken by a mobile phone. There are a significant number of mobile tools, such as asset management software and measuring assistant programs, that will help businesses to implement remote workers sporadically.
An increase in labour
While many people may believe robots are the future, the fact is we need more workers with education to interpret and manage data. The downfall in the construction industry is that it is a very male-heavy area. However, women are slowly making their way into prominent roles in the construction industry. Women are becoming a key asset to the construction industry for a wide variety of reasons. Not only do they bring a fresh perspective, but they are more likely to be in managerial positions due to their soft skills.
Green construction
This is a standard in the modern day. Commercial tenants and home buyers demand sustainable features, and green construction is slowly becoming the norm. Research has shown that greenscaping is now commonplace in urban centres, and as new buildings are being constructed, the demands for the entire property to be sustainable will only increase.
Smart cities
As technology increases, so will smart technology. Sustainable cities are the future, and will require intricate and intense planning. This provides a lot of work for modern construction businesses, but it also provides a pointer for how construction businesses should evolve. These trends are likely to make their way into the industry sometime this year, but if construction businesses are to keep themselves afloat, they’ve got to look beyond 2021.
