Green, automotive and digital industries in the UK can benefit from closer economic cooperation with China
Green, automotive and digital industries in the UK can benefit from closer economic cooperation with China, say leading audit, tax and business advisory firm, Blick Rothenberg.
Winnie Cao, a partner at the firm, said: “Since Covid, China’s cities have suffered from an exodus of western businesses, but they are trying to turn the tide and bring them back. Keir Starmer should seize on this opportunity and support British businesses to expand into China. The green industry in particular could benefit from co-developing sustainability projects and collaborating on zero-carbon technologies with Chinese businesses.”
She added: “The UK’s automotive and digital industry can benefit from green technology cooperation. Chinese EV brands are gaining unprecedented success and the UK share can share in it by supplying or becoming part of the value creation chain. The UK’s rich automotive history and highly specialised bespoke manufacturing capabilities could also be attractive to Chinese businesses seeking to produce luxury automobiles.”
Winnie said: “In the statement issued in January 2025 following the China-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue, attended by the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, both the UK and China expressed a wish to co-develop financial and professional services. In addition, China agreed to address barriers for UK legal, engineering and accountancy firms. Easier access to the UK’s high-quality services in these areas would be very advantageous for Chinese businesses.”
She added: “Visa free travel in both countries would allow people and businesses to exchange ideas, technology, products and innovations. It could help students from both countries gain valuable skills and knowledge through exchange programs.”
Winnie said: “Investment and business setup from China will help build and grow the UK’s economy. The UK can offer a springboard to Chinese companies as they seek further international expansion.”
She added: “Keir Starmer at a speech at the Mansion House Lady Mayor’s Banquet last year expressed that the UK needs a China policy that recognises reality, instead of ‘blowing hot and cold.’ In the coming days, hopefully both countries can make progress towards more ‘temperate’ relations.”
