Darlington business is wool and truly thriving following Start Up Loan support
Darlington-based Pretty Knits Wool Shop has secured a five-figure Start Up Loan with support from the programme’s partner, the Business Enterprise Fund (BEF).
Founded by Hannah Hazledine-Herd, Pretty Knits Wool Shop sells high-quality wools and yarns and offers a friendly, welcoming space for anyone who loves knitting, crochet and handmade creativity.

Hannah originally joined the shop as an employee, helping customers choose yarns, knitting patterns and haberdashery supplies. After five months, the opportunity arose to purchase the business. She knew she could take it to the next level, but without funding, buying the shop and expanding its services would not have been possible.
To turn her ambitions into a reality, Hannah secured a five-figure Start Up Loan with support from BEF. The funding enabled her to take over the business, invest in new stock, expand services, update machinery and promote the shop to attract new customers. The loan also further strengthened the shop’s partnership with Lovely Laundry Ltd, allowing Hannah to enhance its laundry services.
Since receiving the Start Up Loan, Pretty Knits Wool Shop has gone from strength to strength. With a broader product range and improved services, it has become a go-to destination for craft lovers and locals in need of laundry solutions. Increased revenue has also enabled Hannah to reinvest in the business, ensuring continued growth.
Hannah said: ” Without the Start Up Loan, I wouldn’t have been able to take over the business and grow it as I have. The funding has allowed me to offer more services, attract new customers and build a successful business. The whole experience has been quick, easy and incredibly supportive. Amber from the Business Enterprise Fund team was great to work with!”
Amber Kershaw, investment manager at BEF, added: “Hannah’s passion for Pretty Knits Wool Shop was clear from the start, and we’re thrilled to have been able to support her growth. The loan played a key role in helping her take over the business and expand her offerings, leading to greater success and community engagement.”
Cat Smith, senior network manager at the British Business Bank, said: “We’re proud to have played a part in Hannah’s entrepreneurial journey, demonstrating how the right support at the right time can unlock real potential. She is helping Pretty Knits Wool Shop grow even further as a much-loved local business and strengthen the wider community. I look forward to seeing what is next for her.”
Hannah’s journey from employee to business owner is a testament to the power of ambition, resilience, and the right financial support. With the backing of a Start Up Loan, she has not only preserved a much-loved local shop but has also expanded its offerings, strengthened its role within the community, and created new opportunities for growth.
