SMH Mitchells continues growth with five new appointments
SMH Mitchells, a leading Chesterfield Accountancy firm part of the SMH Group, has welcomed five new team members as it continues to invest in its people and support the firm’s long-term growth. The latest appointments reflect a growing reputation for career development, collaboration and creating opportunities for people at every stage of their professional journey.
The new recruits include experienced professionals, graduates and university placement students, strengthening the firm’s audit and tax teams while reinforcing its commitment to developing future talent.
For each of the new starters, the decision to join SMH Mitchells was driven by more than just a new role. The opportunity to develop within a supportive environment, alongside the wider opportunities available across SMH Group, played a significant part in their decision.
The firm’s approach to developing its people continues to attract professionals looking to build rewarding careers. Key factors include:
- · Career progression based on ability and ambition, with opportunities to develop through experience, responsibility and ongoing support.
- · Exposure to a wide range of specialisms, including Audit, Tax, Corporate Finance and Digital Accounting, helping people build well-rounded commercial expertise.
- · Opportunities across the wider SMH Group, allowing colleagues to collaborate with specialists from different offices while remaining part of a close-knit local team.
- · A supportive and people-focused culture, where learning, collaboration and professional development are valued at every stage of a person’s career.
That commitment to developing people is reflected in the firm’s latest appointments.

Arbaaz Yaseen, who joined the firm in June as an ACA qualified audit senior, brought five years’ experience from another accountancy practice. Looking for greater opportunities to progress his career, Arbaaz was encouraged by conversations with former colleagues now working at SMH Mitchells, whose positive experiences reinforced the firm’s reputation for supporting its people and investing in their development.
Dawn Thomson joined the audit team last month as a graduate, having previously applied for a placement opportunity with the firm before gaining experience in corporate finance elsewhere. After maintaining a positive impression of the business and speaking with trainees at a university careers event, Dawn chose to return, recognising the firm’s supportive culture and commitment to helping people build successful careers.
Earlier this month, Azizur Rahman joined the firm as a university placement student. Having followed the development of Mitchells for several years, Azizur was attracted by the opportunities available through the wider SMH Group, giving him exposure to a broad range of specialist expertise and future career pathways.
Joining in September, Finlay Zartarian was impressed by the firm’s strong track record of supporting placement students throughout their studies and into permanent roles. The opportunity to develop within the wider SMH Group also played an important part in his decision.
The firm’s recent growth also includes Ella Gascoigne, who joined in May to continue her ATT studies after previously working within the legal sector. Ella was attracted by the opportunity to continue her professional qualifications within a business that actively supports learning and development.
A people-first approach to growth
The appointments form part of SMH Group’s continued investment in its people, ensuring the business continues to attract talented individuals while supporting clients with an expanding range of expertise across the region.
Commenting on the appointments, David Waining, senior manager at SMH Mitchells, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Ella, Arbaaz, Dawn, Azizur and Finlay to the team. Although they’re all joining us at different stages of their careers, they each recognised the same thing, that SMH Mitchells is a place where people are supported, encouraged to develop and given opportunities to progress.
Being part of the wider SMH Group allows us to offer the best of both worlds. We have the supportive culture and close-knit feel that Mitchells has always been known for, alongside the wider expertise, career opportunities and collaboration that come from being part of a growing regional group. We’re committed to continuing that investment in our people as we grow.”
As the business continues to grow, SMH Mitchells remains focused on creating an environment where talented people can thrive, develop their careers, and contribute to the long-term success of both the firm and its clients.
