When used correctly, technology can help us save time and resources, allowing us to scale impact and maybe even reclaim a bit of personal time.

One of the biggest challenges is ensuring people understand that while technology is a powerful tool, it cannot replace the human element. Human expertise is essential for delivering culturally competent, accurate, and meaningful communication. Our industry must continue advocating for the value of trained professionals in tandem with technology.
Where do you envision the fields of cultural competence and language services heading over the next 5 to 10 years?
I believe technology will continue to transform how we connect through language, making services faster, more accessible, and more personalized. At the same time, I expect to see a growing demand for cultural competence and human insight to ensure those connections are respectful, accurate, and impactful.

What guidance would you offer to someone hoping to build a career in cross-cultural communications or international business?
Many people assume you have to be bilingual to thrive in this field—but that’s not always the case. I’m not bilingual myself, yet I’ve worked in this industry for nearly a decade. My strength is in traditional business operations, while my partner Khadija brings deep language industry experience. That balance has been key to our success. My advice: don’t be intimidated, dive in. And if you can, find a partner whose strengths complement your own.
Looking back, if you were to start your professional journey again, is there anything you might approach differently?
If I could start over, I think I would have invested earlier in building out systems and infrastructure to support growth. Like many entrepreneurs, I wore too many hats for too long. Delegating sooner and trusting others with key responsibilities would have allowed me to focus more strategically. I also would have given myself more grace—understanding that not every decision will be perfect, but each one is part of the learning journey.
Why do you believe Minneapolis (or your broader region) is a great place to live and grow a business?
I grew up in Minneapolis and have raised my children here—it’s home. One of the things I value most is the diversity of the community. I’ve had the opportunity to experience different cultures and traditions not only through work but in daily life. Outside of your work, what hobbies or interests bring you joy? How do you typically like to spend your free time?
I love to exercise and spend time with my family. I’ve coined the term “forced family fun” because my family are mostly introverts—so I have to nudge us to spend time together. We go to sports events, have dinners, watch movies, and just enjoy being around each other. I’ve also taken up needlepoint—it’s surprisingly time-consuming but very relaxing.
