Agentic commerce will be won on trust and not technical capability
Responding to the continued development of payment infrastructure for agentic commerce, Laurence Booth, Group CEO of Trust Payments, comments: “Agentic commerce is rapidly moving from an interesting concept to something the payments industry needs to prepare for in practice. As more infrastructure emerges to allow AI agents to discover products and complete purchases, the bigger question is no longer simply whether an agent can transact but in how those transactions remain trusted, transparent and accountable.”

“Payments have spent decades building safeguards around authentication, consent and consumer protection. Those principles do not disappear when an AI agent sits between the customer and the merchant. The industry will need clear ways to establish what the customer authorised, what the agent was permitted to do and who is responsible when something goes wrong.”
“That is where the next phase of agentic commerce will be (and has to be) decided. Technical connectivity will be important, but consumer confidence will ultimately depend on whether these new experiences can preserve the protections people already expect when they pay online.”
