Burges Salmon appoints new heads of department for real estate and private client
Independent UK law firm Burges Salmon is pleased to announce the appointment of partner Rick Read as the new head of its real estate department.
Rick, who will be taking over the role from Paul Browne, is a partner in the firm’s real estate investment and asset management team. Rick acts for UK and international investors and occupiers on all aspects of their UK property legal requirements.
Rick’s clients include UK and international investment funds and companies and global corporates. He has expertise in Central London offices as well as hotels and leisure. Rick is also a member of Burges Salmon’s International Committee and leads the firm’s key relationships with its preferred firm network in Europe.
Burgess Salmon are also pleased to announce the appointment of partner Jim Aveline as the new head of its private client services department.
Jim, who will be taking over the role from John Barnett, specialises in tax, trusts and estate planning, and also heads the firm’s family business team. Jim’s practice reflects the broad range of clients the firm’s private client aervices department acts for whether UK or offshore, entrepreneurs, landed and farming clients, trustees, family businesses and family offices, all needing advice on how families should hold and protect their assets and pass them down to the next generation. Jim founded and ran a number of start-up businesses before he trained at the firm 20 years ago.
John Barnett will continue in his role as a key partner for the firm’s private client services department, with a focus on providing clients with advice in relation to international and tax matters.

Under John’s leadership over the past seven years, the department has made fantastic progress, both in terms of building our impressive roster of clients and also enhancing our profile in the market, and I’m excited to be taking on this important role to continue that positive growth.”
