Burgess Hodgson acquires Spain Brothers as regional growth strategy accelerates
Burgess Hodgson has announced the acquisition of Spain Brothers, one of the country’s longest-established accountancy firms, as it continues to invest in regional growth and broaden its advisory offering across Kent and the South East.
Founded almost 150 years ago, Spain Brothers has built a trusted reputation for supporting generations of individuals and owner-managed businesses with accountancy, tax, audit and business advice. The firm will now become part of the Burgess Hodgson Group, bringing together two practices with deep roots in Kent and a shared commitment to long-term client relationships.
The acquisition follows Burgess Hodgson’s partnership with Abry Partners and represents another step in the firm’s strategy to grow through carefully selected acquisitions that strengthen its expertise, geographic reach and client offering.
Clients of Spain Brothers will continue to work with the same team they know and trust, while gaining access to Burgess Hodgson’s broader range of specialist services, including corporate finance, payroll and HR, ESG, corporate governance, R&D tax relief, capital allowances and international advisory support.

Richard Stewart, chief executive of Burgess Hodgson, said: “Spain Brothers is exactly the kind of firm we want to welcome into the Burgess Hodgson Group, and we have a long-standing mutual respect. It has served the Kent business community for generations, has an outstanding reputation and, most importantly, shares our belief that great client relationships are built on trust, expertise and personal service. This is another important milestone in our growth journey. By bringing together our complementary strengths, we are creating an even broader advisory business while preserving everything clients value about both firms.”
The Spain Brothers team will relocate to Burgess Hodgson’s Canterbury offices, with clients continuing to deal with their existing advisers and experiencing no interruption to ongoing work or services.
Paul Flood, partner at Spain Brothers, said: “Joining Burgess Hodgson represents an exciting next chapter for our business. From the outset, it was clear that both firms share the same values, putting people first, delivering high-quality advice and building relationships that last for decades. Our clients will continue to receive the same personal service from the same trusted team, while benefiting from access to significantly broader technical expertise and specialist advisory services. We are excited about what this creates for our people and our clients alike.”
Burgess Hodgson would like to thank everyone involved in bringing the transaction to completion, with particular appreciation to the team at Hill Dickinson. Special thanks go to Shantanu Sinha and Elizabeth Roberts for their expert guidance and support throughout the acquisition process.
