China remains the UK’s 4th largest trading partner as the two countries economic relationship continues to grow, say leading audit, tax and business advisory firm, Blick Rothenberg.
Winnie Cao, a Partner at the firm, said: “The UK government’s latest trade statistics confirm that China remains the UK’s 4th largest trading partner. UK exports to China have increased by 2.5% and imports from China to the UK have gone up by 2.7% in the 12 months to March 2026, but with the strength of UK brands and services, there is room for this economic relationship to grow.”
She added: “However, the UK could explore Chinese market more. Currently the total UK market share in China is only 1.3%. Given the trends of Chinese businesses expanding overseas, and UK businesses who created successful multi-national corporates over the years, businesses in both countries could learn much from each other.”
Winnie said: “The UK’s position as the gateway to Europe and the Americas could enable the growth of China’s leading technologies while helping Chinese companies blend and integrate into the global business community. UK businesses will benefit from more clientele and growth opportunities brought by Chinese investment.”
She added: “On 8th September, the UK prime minister, Andy Burnham spoke with President Xi Jinping and emphasised that the UK will maintain a consistent China policy and be steadfast in building a long term and strategic partnership. It is positive to see a renewed push for a better and more stable relationship alongside strong trade figures.”
Winnie said: “25th September is China’s Mid-Autumn Festival, the most celebrated festival after Chinese New Year. The full moon symbolises harmony, reunion and a sense of connection over distance. Traditionally, for those separated by distance, looking at the same full moon creates a sense of connection. With both the physical distance, as well a few years of disconnection, this is perhaps the time for reunion and creating a greater sense of connection again between the UK and China.”
