IPSE responds to latest ONS Labour market statistics
IPSE, the Association of Independent Professionals and the self-employed, has today welcomed the latest Labour Market Statistics from the Office for National Statistics which once again show a rise in the number of self-employed in the UK.
The statistics released by the ONS today have shown yearly increases in both the number of full and part-time self-employed workers. Self-employed people working full-time has increased by 160,000 to 3.25 million while the number of part-time workers has increased 79,000 to reach 1.28 million, a 5.1% and 6.5% increase respectively.
Chris Bryce, chief executive at ISPE, said: “With a total yearly increase of 5.5%, the latest ONS statistics show the meteoric rise of self-employment in the UK shows no signs of slowing down.
“Particularly welcome is the ever increasing number of women becoming their own bosses. There is a 9% increase in the number of women going it alone from a year ago which doubles the number of men becoming self-employed in the same timeframe.
“Self-employment is now evident in all industries and sectors, incorporates all age groups and genders. As the number of self-employed grows so too does the sector’s vital contribution to the economy, which helps to stimulate growth and mitigate risk across the UK.”
