Kickstarter businesses to inspire you
The digital age has made it easier than ever to start a business. You can research, develop an idea, outsource, and get funding for a business, all from the comfort of your own home.
As a result, a lot of incredibly creative businesses have flourished in the past few years. In this article, we take a look at some that caught our attention, to help inspire you to start a business of your own, or just find that gadget you didn’t know you needed!
Exploding kittens
Exploding kittens is an incredibly popular card game, with a fun and surprisingly tense premise. Ideal for cat lovers, you draw cards until you hit an exploding kitten, and if you don’t have a card that can save you, you lose. There are also a whole host of other wonderful kitten cards to shake things up (literally) as you go. Like Cards Against Humanity, another Kickstarter card game, it seized people’s imaginations, and as a result, managed to bring in a massive amount of funding.
Mercator
Mercator, a London design studio, have recently brought their Space-X inspired pen to the world. Named NOMINAL – the term used when a spaceship launch is going to plan – it’s embraced the burgeoning trend for space exploration going on at the moment, allowing everyone to have a little reminder of the inspirational exploration occurring above our skies at the moment. The pen itself is high quality, CNC-machined from 316L stainless steel and aircraft-grade aluminium, and the lid features four Falcon 9 style retracting legs, meaning when it’s not in use, it can stand proud on your desk as an elegant ornament.
Fidget cube
Like the fidget spinner but better, the fidget cube also took advantage of people’s desire to fiddle with things and turned it into a fun cube. Each side of the cube features a different thing to play with, including:
- A clicker, that feels like a pen
- A glider, that feels like a gaming joystick
- A generic, satisfying switch
- A steel rolling ball
- A series of spinning wheels
It managed to raise a significant amount of capital, in part because it’s so fun! The fidget cube brings several, highly satisfying things we find in daily life and combines them in a cube that can easily sit in your pocket, ready for whenever you get bored.
3Doodler
With the proliferation of 3D printers and rapid advances surrounding the technology, the 3Doodler represents a fun, accessible variation on the idea! It’s essentially a pen which allows you to draw in 3D, a 3D printer that you operate entirely by hand. It obviously won’t allow for the same kind of precision that a proper machine will, but that’s not really the point. It’s small, affordable, and a fun way of exploring ideas and creating, for kids and adults alike.
