Letter to the editor: Is Britain’s economic recovery losing its legs?
Dear Editor,
The recent news that Britain’s economic recovery is ‘losing its legs’* is certainly unwelcome. Just last month, the economy was noted to be back up to pre-crisis levels and whilst this was certainly positive to hear, it begged the question as to whether the UK was beginning to grow too rapidly and potentially overheat.
In the run up to, and certainly following the Scottish Referendum, uncertainty has begun to grow as evidenced by a survey of MD2MD SME member managing directors – the consensus is that 2015 is going to bring a slow-down in growth.
The combination of EU countries lagging behind with their own stalled economies and the inevitable distraction of the next UK general election has further stymied the outlook.
What’s needed now is a steady hand from the Chancellor and the Prime Minister to reassure the business engine of our economy – those SME’s who provide the fuel for growth – that measures will be taken promptly to support our small and medium sized business and ultimately cement our position as the country to lead Europe in recovery.
Yours faithfully,
Bob Bradley
Chairman
