London job market heats up despite colder weather
The lead up to Christmas 2014 is seeing a marked upsurge in the number of jobs posted and applications made across the country, with London being one of the most formidable hubs of job hunting activity.
This time of year usually sees a final push for recruitment, as companies across the UK look to tie up the year’s loose ends and make final hiring decisions. There are also seasonal, temporary hires to take into consideration, too.
However, CV-Library has witnessed far greater numbers than expected, in terms of job applications and vacancies posted. This goes to show that whilst as a nation we are moving towards the festive break, recruitment is still very much on our businesses’ minds.
Here’s how our October Job Market Report for London breaks down:
Jobs posted
– Over 22,000 vacancies were posted in the London region in the month of October.
– This is a 12% increase on activity during September, and a staggering 34% increase on October last year.
– Most jobs were posted within the construction, education and engineering sectors, respectively.
Candidate activity
– 534,000 job applications were made to jobs within the area. This is a 1% increase on last month’s volume, revealing a steady increase in job hunting interest from the local population.
– There was an average of 24 job applications to each vacancy – meaning London was one of the most competitive regions during October.
Sector news
– Administration was the most popular sector, with applications to this type of role making up 18% of the total volume. The average minimum salary advertised for this type of role was £23,822.
– The Construction sector was the second most popular, with the number of applications making up 11% of October’s total. The average minimum salary advertised was £43,171.
– Accounting roles were the third-most popular, representing 7% of the total and with an average minimum advertised salary of £36,505.
