Motorcycle sales grow 11.7% in February
February 2015 motorcycle registrations showed a market increase on 2014, highlighting the return of consumer confidence and spending power. Sales in most power ranges increased with the only real exception being the sub 50cc mopeds that decreased 20.7%. As with previous months the 51 – 125cc sector showed an increase of 12.4% as the biggest sector in volume terms, which means 207 more machines registered over February 2014.
Stephen Latham, head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) said: “February is generally a quiet month for motorcycle sales with buyers holding back to take delivery of the new ‘15’ plate. Many of the sales in February will come from the less plate-status buyers of commuter motorcycles, such as scooters and lower powered naked machines.
“After 5 years of decline, motorcycle sales are now returning to a more stable position. Registrations for March 2015 show a strong market and new number plates can improve the residual value of prestigious machines.
“Expensive motorcycles are the key to the dealerships profitability to increase the overall sales volume.
“A general improvement in both the economy and employment figures is reflecting well on bike sales. We hope to see this trend continue throughout 2015.”
