Time to deliver for UK Automotive
In little more than a week the UK Parliament returns with a busy legislative agenda. High amongst its priorities will be measures to stimulate economic growth and the automotive sector can be the driver of that change.
The Labour Party set out its Automotive Sector Plan back in October with proposals to address many of the industry’s urgent needs, from improving free trade agreements to supporting the EV transition and boosting infrastructure investment, plus the introduction of an Industrial Strategy that would encompass our sector. We now look to government to deliver on those plans and will work with it to ensure delivery matches ambition.
Industry will do its bit, and part of that growth must be through increased exports. As a sector where up to 80% of our output can be destined for overseas markets, we must seek every opportunity to grow in an increasingly competitive global environment. SMMT is supporting members on that journey with a packed agenda of events in the UK and overseas over the coming months.
Post-summer activity starts in Germany next month with Automechanika Frankfurt where SMMT’s UK Pavilion is already sold out. The stand will be a showcase of everything from aftermarket parts and innovative brake systems to small-volume electric vehicles and best-in-class remanufacturing.
Also in September, a joint mission led by SMMT and the Department for Business and Trade will head to China for meetings with Chinese OEMs and stakeholders before attending the World New Energy Vehicle Congress, Hainan, to participate in the Sino-UK Zero Emission Vehicle Cooperation and Development Forum.
Then, in November, SMMT and the British Consulate in Los Angeles will support a trade mission to CoMotion, one of North America’s leading new mobility expositions, as well as hosting meetings with key businesses and stakeholders in the region. In the same week, SMMT will take a UK delegation to Žilina, Slovakia – with exhibitions, networking and B2B meetings at CEE Automotive Supply Chain, including representatives from OEM and Tier 1 companies based in the country.
The high demand for these overseas events reflects the value that UK businesses place on strong trading relationships with global markets.
