Work in accounting and finance and want to earn more money?
With the latest labour market statistics from the ONS revealing that average weekly earnings for UK workers have increased by 3.4%, further data released today by CV-Library has found that contractor wages for accounting and finance roles are drastically outpacing average pay across the UK.
The leading independent job board analysed average salary data from hundreds of thousands of contractor jobs posted on its site and compared these figures with average pay across each sector.
It found that while the average pay for accounting and finance professionals stood at £34,704, contractors can expect to earn up to £50,369.80 per year in financial services and £46,699 per year in accounting. As such, the financial services and accounting sectors are some of the top for contractor pay that outpaces the industry average:
1. Engineering – 75.5% above average
2. Social Care – 72.2% above average
3. Manufacturing – 66.9% above average
4. Design – up 66.8% above average
5. Construction – 46% above average

Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library comments: “It’s no secret that contractors command far higher salaries than the average worker and our data shows that accounting and finance professionals could be earning between 37.5% and 45.1% more than average. That being said, contracting isn’t for everyone, especially if you’re looking for stability and key workplace perks from your employer.”
In addition to the above, the job board found that the average day rate for contractors working in financial services stood at £193.73 and accounting at £183.46. What’s more, certain job roles command even higher pay packets:
1. Finance Analyst – £280.98 per day
2. Finance Manager – £237.70 per day
3. Accountant – £225.46 per day
4. Finance Officer – £112.47 per day
5. Payroll – £110.97 per day
Biggins continues: “High pay and flexibility can certainly be appealing factors, but at the end of the day, it’s up to your own personal preferences and what feels right for you.”
