Redefining the word “leadership” in an ever-changing world
If you are a leader, then you need to change your way of conventional thinking. Instead, you need to focus on adapting to different mindsets so that you can make decisions that further your way of working.
Leaders are facing new challenges
Leaders in this day and age are now facing new challenges. These have all been accelerated by the pandemic, but it has been moving in this direction for quite some time. Leaders have to learn how to manage their ambiguity as well as being able to conversate through virtual business telecommunications and software. On top of this, they need to learn how to navigate this complex age of working in a remote location. With economic uncertainty plaguing the future, it is becoming more and more clear by the day that leaders are not going to be able to meet challenges without adapting their practices.

Redefining leadership in the current climate
Leadership experts have been redefining leadership for quite some time. They have been doing it since the very first Industrial Revolution. Peter Drucker has explored what drives performance, and Simon Sinek has also been able to explore the concept of purpose before profit. He did this by introducing his golden circle, before looking into the “why” behind every phase of his operation. Lastly, Vineet Nayar has been helping leaders to rethink their opinion of who is important. He likes to put his employees first and then his customers second, which has turned the idea of conventional management completely upside down.
Leaders of the future
Future leaders are not going to be defined by what they do. They are going to be defined in terms of how they think. This is helping to shift from a perspective to a mindset. Future leaders are going to have to embrace the notion of metathinking. This is where leaders essentially gain awareness over their assumptions so that they can develop their overall ability to view a situation in a different way to what they would normally. Of course, having a flexible command over their psyche will help them to overcome their limiting beliefs, and if they can think like a scientist, an artist or even an entrepreneur, then they can adapt their behaviour to just about any context or situation. At the end of the day, it is going to be the critical thinkers who are going to lead us through this new world, and it is also going to help us to navigate through both change and transformation.
Leadership development
Leadership development really has been dominated by various academic programmes. They advocate that the way forward would be for people to use historical data. This is like driving a car but only using the rear-view mirror. Although it’s important to look back, it is also very important to look forward as well. Of course, this is going to pave the way for a new generation of thinking, and it is going to help people to become more creative, inventive and people-focused for the future.
